If the animals are born like they are, they won’t know they’re genetically engineered and it’s not hurting them.

Most scientists I’ve met who work in animal labs (rats, etc.) are, oddly or not, very much pro animal rights, sometimes to the extent of donating to SPCA or HSUS, or actively protesting against puppymills.
So good on you for properly conveying the mad geneticist as a rights activist. Now if we can just get approval for human testing…
